In the lead up to Christmas, I wanted to take this opportunity to recognise everyone who is working longer and harder at this time of the year to make everyone’s holiday season a special one.
It’s not uncommon to hear people comment on how exhausted they are, how much they have to do before Christmas, and how they can’t wait for the break! If you are in business, particularly retail, you welcome December for the income it provides, but also feel the pressure of potentially longer trading hours, managing your team and meeting customer needs. Many service-based businesses are also busy even if the service you provide has very little to do with Christmas, with customers wanting to tie up loose ends before the end of the year.
Therefore, it’s worth a reminder that many of us are feeling a little overwhelmed with deadlines looming and competing priorities for our time and energy.
The best thing we call all do at this time of the year is to be kind, patient and understanding of others.
If you are struggling to meet the demands of the season in business or in your personal life (there’s often lots of expectations at this time of the year), it’s important to practice some self-care, rely on the systems and processes in your business that you have worked hard to establish and prioritise your attention and efforts.
It’s a good time of the year to revisit the Eisenhower Decision Matrix., which is a task management tool that helps you organise and prioritise tasks by urgency and importance. It separates tasks between Important and Not Important, Urgent and Not Urgent and then determines whether you should Do, Schedule, Delegate or Delete.
Hopefully you will also be looking forward to some time away from your business or employment to unwind, reflect and be grateful for lessons learned and your achievements in 2023. It may also be a good time to start thinking about 2024 goals and any new habits you want to establish in the new year.
