On the weekend just gone we celebrated the 10th annual Best in Business Awards for the Gladstone Region. I was again invited to be on the judging panel for the awards which is an honour and a privilege to help decide on each of the winners.
It is fantastic to hear about the amazing things that local businesses and organisations are doing with some very inspiring stories being told by great advocates for our region. Whether it is a new business that has started with fresh ideas or if it is a long established business that has moved with the times or recreated itself, there are great things going on locally.
When it comes to being the best business in your sector it can come down to one thing that is the point of difference from your business to others – the X factor. Now this can be one of many things that you do or provide in your business so there is no one answer for a business owner to determine their X factor.
During the interview process we could identify the X factor of the winners in many ways. With some it came from the passion that the business owner or manager had which came through when talking to us. For others it was the WHY they do what they do in their business and how they help others.
For some it was the extra mile that they went to be able to provide a product or service that they had specifically identified as being required in our region. And for others it was the amazing customer service and experience that they offered every single day that they were open for business.
Some business owners will know what their X factor is and will promote this while others may have it but do not realise. This is where it is essential to take a step back from the day to day operations and think about WHY you are in business, what your point of difference is and what is your X factor.
