Is your Expert Qualified - Joe Smith

We live in a time of Social Media Influencers, Youtubers and a whole host of other people who are claiming to be experts in a certain field or that they are the authority on a certain subject. Celebrities plug products that they most likely never use or wear and command significant fees for doing so. So how can we know who or what is ‘real’ and who the experts are?

To become a Chartered Accountant, we spend several years at university and then a few more years completing our Charted Accountant qualification. Including study and then working with businesses as their accountant and business advisor I have gained over 20 years of experience as well as professional development training required each year to maintain my qualification. I have colleagues who have a few more years’ experience than I have as well. Working together I believe we can say we are experts in certain fields and our clients can trust in the advice we provide.

Would you go for medical advice regarding a serious illness to someone without a qualification as a Doctor? Or would you go to get a problem with your car brakes fixed by an unqualified mechanic? If the answer is no then why would you take the advice of an ‘expert’ via social media or from a coach with no qualification on how to operate and improve your business?

The value in speaking to a qualified business advisor, such as a Chartered Accountant, is that they have proven skills, qualifications and experience in their field and you should be able to trust the advice they are giving. Similar to this, a financial advisor will be qualified to provide advice on investments, financial products and superannuation.

The value provided in these services provided is not the hours that go into the meeting – it is the skills, experience and qualifications that come together to give sound advice to you. I would urge you to do your research before taking advice and implementing it, whether it being financial or other advice being sought.
