Movers and Shakers - Tina Zawila

I'm writing this article on a train between Memphis and New Orleans as I currently enjoy a short holiday exploring some of the USA. So far we have been to some great cities with fascinating history, in particular, the stories of Civil War, Civil Rights and incredible musicians. We have visited museums where we have spent hours learning about amazing leaders who have left legacies that are still as alive today as they were 40-50 years ago.

So what are the traits of these leaders that I have gleaned from my holiday education?

· Firstly, they were 100% committed to their cause or their profession. They were completely dedicated. They didn't talk about work-life balance, their work was their life. In fact, they rarely referred to what they did as "work"! Their family and friends joined them on their journey and supported them in their ambitions and goals.

· They were laser-focused. They knew exactly what they wanted to achieve and did everything possible to make their dreams a reality. Many times they overcame what would appear to be significant road blocks (including rejection, jail, and even violence) to achieve their goals.

· They were grateful and humble. They appreciated the people around them that were helping them realise their vision. They gave back and were generous with their time, attention and money (if applicable). They didn't take their position for granted.

Two of my favourite quotes that demonstrate these leadership traits include:

"Ambition is a dream with a V8 Engine" Elvis Presley

"I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity... I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that's all I want to say." Rev Martin Luther King Jr, 4 February 1968 speaking of his own eulogy just two months before he was assassinated.

Unfortunately some of these leaders met untimely deaths, tragically some via assassination, however their goals, ideals and passion lives on.

Everyone of us is a leader of our own destiny, we influence those around us, and we leave a legacy. Few of us may leave an impact on the world like Rev Martin Luther King Jnr, John F Kennedy or Elvis Presley, however, we can all influence our own family and friends. Long live the Kings.
